CU's Whiting PacWest Player of Year

Chaminade senior Zack Whiting was named Pacific West Conference men's basketball Player of the Year and Brigham Young-Hawai'i's Lucas Alves was chosen Freshman of the Year, the conference announced Wednesday.

Whiting is a three-time All-PacWest selection. He also was named to the NCAA Division II Daktronics West Region first team and is a finalist for the Cousy Award as the nation's top point guard.

Whiting finished as the NCAA assists leader with 10.5 per game. He ranked 26th in scoring with a 20.9 points-per-game average.

Alves, a 6-foot-9 post player from Brazil, averaged 14.6 points and 6.0 rebounds per game.

Chaminade's Marko Kolaric, a 7-foot junior center, also was named to the first team. He averaged 11.7 points and 10.0 rebounds per game.

Making the second team were Hawai'i-Hilo forward Sam Wilhoite, and BYUH guard Eric Boyce and forward Wu Tai-hao.

Earning honorable mention honors were Chaminade's Hayden Heiber and Stewart Kussler, Hilo's Justin Dobson, BYUH's Paul Peterson and Hawai'i Pacific's Rishi Kakad.

Grand Canyon's Scott Mossman was Coach of the Year.

SWIMMING/DIVING



FRICK DIVES IN SECOND

University of Hawai'i diver Magnus Frick finished second in the 1-meter diving event yesterday at the NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships at the University of Minnesota's Aquatic Center.

Frick, who led after the morning's preliminary round, scored 395.05 points in the finals. Terry Horner, a freshman from Florida State, won with 399.35 points.

Frick, a junior from Ingaro, Sweden, earned 390.15 points in the preliminaries, a little more than 23 points better than Horner.

Mats Wiktorsson, a junior from Jonkoping, Sweden, finished 20th in the preliminaries with a score of 298.60 and failed to advance.

Stanford senior Hongzhe Sun, an 'Iolani School alum, finished ninth in the final of the 200-yard individual medley in 1 minute, 44.60 seconds. California junior Mark Eckert, another 'Iolani alum, finished 25th in the preliminaries in 1:47.18. The top 16 advanced to the finals, where Adam Ritter of Arizona won in 1:41.72.

Sun also was a member of Stanford's 400 medley relay team, which was disqualified in the final.


TRACK AND FIELD

UH ATHLETES QUALIFY

University of Hawai'i senior Novelle Murray threw the discus 170 feet, 4 inches at the Cal State Northridge Spring Break Open Wednesday to qualify for her fourth NCAA Regional.

Murray also finished second in the shot put with a personal-best of 45-2 1/4 and second in the hammer throw with 176-10.

Sophomore Emily Sheppard won the high jump with 5-8 3/4 to qualify for her second NCAA Regional.

Sophomore Thalia Amanakis set personal bests in the 100-meter hurdles (14.48) and 400 hurdles (1:01.30), and junior Aileen Ramos had personal bests in the 100 (13.52) and 200 (27.78) dashes.


SOFTBALL

BAYLOR BEATS UH

Lisa Ferguson pitched a four-hitter with 10 strikeouts to outduel Hawai'i ace Justine Smethurst as No. 10 Baylor beat No. 23 UH, 3-2, last night in Bank of Hawai'i Invitational play at Rainbow Wahine Stadium.

Ashley Monceaux hit a two-run homer in the first and Alex Colyer singled in the go-ahead run with two outs in the top of the seventh for the Bears (25-6).

Smethurst gave up seven hits, three in the seventh, while striking out nine and walking one for the Rainbow Wahine (24-7).

Tyleen Tausaga hit a solo homer in the second — the 'Bows' school-record 44th of the season — and Brandi Peiler singled in a run in the sixth to tie the score at 2.

BYUH SWEEPS

Agesha Lightsy hit a three-run homer as host Brigham Young-Hawai'i beat Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 7-2, yesterday to complete a sweep of a non-conference doubleheader.

Rachelle Wade had two hits for the Seasiders (9-9). Erika Weingart and Elisa Gutierrez each had two hits for the Athenas (5-12).

In the opener, Wade hit a two-run homer, Jana Dewey hit a solo shot and Crystal De La Cruz pitched a three-hitter as BYUH won, 8-0, in a game shortened to five innings by the mercy rule.

HILO RANKED NO. 11

Hawai'i-Hilo is ranked No. 11 in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division II Top 25 softball poll.

Lock Haven (Pa.) is No. 1, followed by Alabama-Huntsville and Angelo State (Texas).

Tickets for the Grand Sumo Tournament in Hawai'i go on sale beginning tomorrow at 9 a.m. at various outlets, organizers announced.

The event will be held June 9-10 at Blaisdell Arena with 40 top-ranked professional sumotori competing. It is the first return to Hawai'i for sumo since 1993.

Ticket prices begin at $35 and run to $330 for choice ringside seats.
