800 rally to keep Kukui Gardens affordable

Advertiser Staff

A throng of more than 800 people attended an accountability rally at the Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa in Kalihi today.

The event was sponsored by FACE (Faith Action for Community Equity), a faith-based multicultural organization in Hawai'i.

The focus of attention was Kukui Gardens and making sure politicians make sure that the apartments will remain affordable.

Low-income residents of the 857-unit apartment complex near Chinatown have feared displacement or even homelessness since the complex was nearly sold in 2006.

A compromise deal brokered by FACE in January would preserve half the property for affordable units and the other half for a mixed-use residential, retail and office complex.
