Waikiki mall set for steak eatery

A restaurant with ties to New York City's famed Peter Luger Steak House plans to open at Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center in Waikiki.

Wolfgang's Steakhouse, projected to open late this year or early next year, is the namesake restaurant of Wolfgang Zwiener, who created his own fine-dining steak house three years ago in New York after a roughly 40-year career as head waiter at Peter Luger's.

The Hawai'i restaurant should be the fourth Wolfgang's, following a second that opened in New York last year and a third planned for Beverly Hills, Calif.

"We're extremely excited to be expanding there to Waikiki," said Peter Zwiener, company president and son of Wolfgang.

Wolfgang's Steakhouse in Waikiki is being developed as a joint venture with WDI International Inc., a Hawai'i affiliate of Japan-based restaurant operator WDI Corp. that caters weddings, operates three local Tony Roma's restaurants and later this year plans to open Taormina Sicilian Cuisine at Waikiki Beach Walk on Lewers Street.

The roughly 200-seat Wolfgang's, which may operate under that name or W Steakhouse, is the last major anchor to be announced as a tenant at Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center as part of the mall's $84 million renovation by owner Kamehameha Schools.

Other new major tenants previously announced include Seņor Frog's, P.F. Chang's, Hilo Hattie and the Roy Tokujo theatrical production and nightclub Waikiki Nei.

All are scheduled to open later this year.
