Grand opera makes its grand entrance on the Valley Isle, courtesy of Hawaii Opera Theatre and its production of Puccini's "Madama Butterfly."

It's the story of the delicate geisha Cio-Cio San, who marries the U.S. naval officer Pinkerton. Her joy turns to sorrow, and finally tragedy as she finds her love has been betrayed. The HOT production showcases sets and costumes designed by internationally acclaimed artist Jun Kaneko.

Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. today and 2 p.m. tomorrow at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center's Castle Theater. It's $32 standing-room-only tonight; virtually sold out tomorrow (after which it's SRO). (808) 242-7469, www.mauiarts.org.
