A memorial service for Peter A. Aduja, the first person of Filipino ancestry to win a major elective post in Hawai'i as well as the United States, will be March 29 at Kawaiaha'o Church.

Aduja, 86, of Kane'ohe died Feb. 19 in Las Vegas.

In 1954, Aduja won a seat in the Hawai'i Territorial House of Representatives as a Republican from Hilo.

The only child of immigrant parents from Salindig, Vigon, Luzon, Illocos Sur in the Philippines, Aduja came to Hawai'i in 1928 at age 8 and rose to distinction as an attorney, patriot, politician, Constitutional Convention delegate, and community volunteer with more than 30 organizations.

Visitation is at 9 a.m. and the service will begin at 10 a.m. A ceremonial service will follow at 2 p.m. at the Hawai'i State Veterans Cemetery in Kane'ohe.

Survivors include daughter Melodie, son Jay and two grandchildren.
