Hawai'i divers honored at NCAAs

University of Hawai'i diver Magnus Frick finished in third place while teammate Mats Wiktorsson took 13th on the 3-meter springboard diving competition yesterday on the second of three days of the 2007 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championship at the University of Minnesota's Aquatic Center.

Frick, who took second Thursday on the 1-meter, accumulated a score of 407.05 yesterday on the 3-meter springboard in the championship finals.

The junior from Ingaro, Sweden, picked up his second first-team All-America honor with the finish. Frick's second-place finish Thursday is the highest UH male finish at the NCAA Championship in either swimming or diving.

Wiktorsson, a junior from Jonkoping, Sweden, placed 13th in the consolation finals with a score of 349.40. He garnered his second honorable mention All-America honor on the 3M in the past two seasons.

The NCAA Championship concludes today.

Stanford senior Hongzhe Sun, an 'Iolani graduate, was a member of Stanford's 800-yard freestyle relay team that finished third in 6:17.92, and he was part of the 200 medley relay squad that placed second in 1:24.85.

California junior Mark Eckert, another 'Iolani alum, finished 11th in the 400 individual medley in 3:46.63.

UC Irvine junior Randall Tom was a part of the team's 200 medley relay squad that placed 12th in 1:27.03. He also placed ninth in the 100 butterfly in 46.71.


SOFTBALL

'BOWS ROUT NEVADA

Kate Robinson pitched a two-hitter with five strikeouts and No. 23 Hawai'i routed Nevada, 16-0, yesterday in a Bank of Hawai'i Invitational game that was shortened to five innings at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Robinson, Tanisha Milca, Brandi Peiler and Alana Power each drove in two runs for UH (25-7). Milca also hit a home run against the Wolf Pack (7-17).

The tournament concludes today.

TWIN BILL FOR PACWEST

The Pacific West Conference softball doubleheader between the University of Hawai'i-Hilo and Brigham Young University-Hawai'i yesterday was cancelled due to rain.

Today's 5 p.m. twin bill at the Central O'ahu Regional Park will now be counted toward the PWC standings.


BASEBALL

HPU SWEEPS A PAIR

Jason Shimizu pitched a five-hitter with two walks and eight strikeouts as Hawai'i Pacific beat Southern Connecticut State, 4-1, yesterday to complete a doubleheader sweep at Central O'ahu Regional Park.

In the first game, Zackary Parnell drove in three runs, and Johnny Gentry and Tripper Chung each added two RBIs as HPU won, 13-7.

HPU is 9-9; SCS is 4-8.


GOLF

DWYER TRAILS BY 3

Kailua's Bridget Dwyer shot a 1-over-par 72 and is three strokes behind leader Janell Howland of Boise, Idaho, in the first round of the $75,000 Greater Tampa Duramed Futures Classic that was suspended yesterday because of bad weather at Riverview, Fla.

Maui's Shayna Miyajima will be one of 27 players returning to the 6,377-yard Summerfield Crossings Golf Club today to finish the first round. Miyajima was at 77 through 15 holes.
