Apele promoted to Big Isle police captain

Hawai'i County Police Department officer Randy Apele has been promoted from lieutenant to captain by Police Chief Lawrence K. Mahuna.Apele's appoint to the position was effective Friday. He takes over command of the Kona Patrol District.
Apele was most recently lieutenant in charge of community policing. He fills the position formerly held by Capt. Paul Kealoha, who transferred to the Area II Criminal Investigations Division to fill a vacancy left by the retirement of Capt. Robert Hickcox.
