Scottish festival dates set

The 26th annual Hawaiian Scottish Festival & Highland Games will take place March 31 and April 1 in Kapi'olani Park.

The free event will run from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days.

Sponsored in part by the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, this event is a Highland Gathering that celebrates the Scottish heritage in Hawai'i.

Festival highlights include:

  • Highland games and sports such as tossing the caber, running the kilted mile and the popular housewives' rolling pin toss for distance and accuracy.

  • Nonstop live entertainment including Celtic entertainers Maui Celtic Pipes & Drums; Chicago-based Switchback; The Dog Watch from Hilo; Celtic Waves; and Whiskey Starship.

    There will be performances by the British Columbia Highland Dancers and the Royal Scottish Country Dancers. The Royal Hawaiian Band will perform Highland tunes and popular Hawaiian songs based on Highland folk tunes.

  • A gathering of clans from Hawai'i and the Mainland.

  • Demonstrations of swordplay and fencing by the Society for Creative Anachronism and the Musketeer Fencers.

  • Mini-golf at the park.

  • Traditional crafts and food.
