Muliwai Trail on the Big Island reopens

Advertiser Staff

HILO, Hawai'i — The Department of Land and Natural Resources today reopened the Muliwai Trail following completion of maintenance work on the trail and the Waimanu Valley Campground.

The area was closed after a tree fell across the halfway point of the trail in February. The fallen tree was removed along with several others that were deemed hazardous.

Crews also carried out general maintenance at the campground, including washing, painting and re-roofing the composting toilets, and removing 10 33-gallon size bags of trash by sling-loaded helicopter, according to DLNR Chairman Peter Young.

Camping permits for campground are again being processed at the Hilo DLNR Forestry and Wildlife office at (808) 974-4221.

The trailhead of the 18-mile Muliwai trail is accessed through Waipi'o Valley, located at the end of Highway 240 near Honoka'a. The trail zigzags up the valley's western wall, climbing approximately 1,200 feet to a plateau. The trail leads across the plateau to Waimanu, crossing 12 gulches before descending 1,200 feet into the valley.
