Porter charged with battery in altercation with Bengal

LAS VEGAS -- Trash talk between two NFL players in a southern Nevada casino led to a punch and a misdemeanor battery charge against former Pittsburgh Steeler linebacker Joey Porter, police said today.

Porter was issued a summons after the 6:55 p.m. altercation yesterday with Cincinnati Bengals offensive tackle Levi Jones at a blackjack table at the Palms hotel-casino, said Officer Martin Wright, a Las Vegas police spokesman.

The 27-year-old Jones, who is listed by the NFL as 6-foot-5 and 307 pounds, was treated at the scene for minor injuries following the clash with the 6-foot-3 250-pound Porter.

''It seems they go against each other on the field, and here they take it into the public,'' Wright said. He cited an initial report from a Las Vegas police lieutenant who said the two players had a history of on-field trash talking with each other.

Wright said a written police investigation and report won't be complete until at least the end of the week.

Porter, 29, will be scheduled to appear in Las Vegas Municipal Court, where Wright said he could face a penalty up to a year in jail and up to a $1,000 fine. No date was immediately available. It was not clear today if Porter had a lawyer in the case.

Porter signed a five-year, $32 million contract earlier this month with the Miami Dolphins.
