Condition of burned Maui baby worsens

WAILUKU, Maui — The medical condition of an 8-month-old Maui girl burned in a suspected child abuse case has worsened, Maui police said.

The baby was suffering from breathing difficulties when her grandparents brought her to the Maui Memorial Medical Center emergency room March 13, acting police Capt. John Jakubczak said.

Doctors at that time were suspicious of burns on the girl's face and upper right arm. The baby is believed to have been injured sometime after a March 10 doctor's appointment when no burns were noted, Jakubczak said.

No arrests have been made. The child lives at a Kahului home with her mother and her grandparents. The infant was transferred to Kapi'olani Medical Center for Women and Children, where she is listed in critical condition with organ failure caused by sepsis, he said.
