State flags flying at half-staff for Kaulukukui, Aduja

Advertiser Staff

State flags are flying at half-staff today and Thursday to honor two former state elected officials who died recently.

Gov. Linda Lingle has ordered state flags at state and county buildings to be flown at half-staff today in honor of former Office of Hawaiian Affairs Trustee Thomas K. Kaulukukui Sr., who died on March 9. Kaulukukui served on the OHA board from 1980-1994. He also was a legendary multisport athlete — the first University of Hawai'i football player to earn All-America honors.

On Thursday, state flags will be at half-staff in honor of former state Rep. Peter Aduja, who died on Feb. 19. Aduja, a native of Ilocos Sur Province in the Philippines, became the first Filipino in Hawai'i to be elected to the Territorial House of Representatives. He represented Hilo as a Republican for one two-year term.

The half-staff flag will be displayed from sunrise to sundown on the respective day of interment for Kaulukukui and Aduja.
