Two O'ahu inmates injured while performing repairs

Advertiser Staff

Two inmates on a workline at O'ahu Community Correctional Center were injured today when one of them accidentally stepped on a transformer.

The men, ages 53 and 41, were taken to The Queen's Medical Center following the 11:45 a.m. accident near the receiving area at OCCC. The older man suffered a wrist injury and burns to his legs while the other inmate had burns to his hands.

The men were part of a workline of nine to 11 inmates assigned to remove fencing around a generator and transformer scheduled to be replaced Wednesday. The older man was on a metal ladder and stepped on the transformer cover causing it to explode. He fell about 7 feet.

The younger inmate suffered burns from holding the ladder, which conducted the electric current.
