BASKETBALL

Chaminade guard honored

Chaminade guard Zack Whiting, the Pacific West Conference Player of the Year, was named to the Daktronics All-America second team yesterday.

Whiting, a 6-foot-4 senior from Chico, Calif., led all NCAA divisions with 10.5 assists per game. He was 26th nationally in scoring with a 20.9 average.

Whiting also is a finalist for the Bob Cousy Award.

BASEBALL

Bradley beats Hilo

Justin Carr and Ryan Curry homered as Bradley thumped error-plagued Hawai'i-Hilo, 13-0, last night in a non-conference game at Wong Stadium.

Carr's two-run homer and Curry's two-run single sparked an eight-run third inning for the Braves (8-7), who sent 12 players to the plate and took advantage of three errors.

Mike McMillan added three hits, and Tyler Thornton (five innings) and Bryan Porter (two innings) teamed on a five-hitter in the seven-inning game for Bradley.

Michael Higa batted 2 for 3 and reliever Emil DeAndreis allowed one hit in two scoreless innings for the Vulcans (5-21).

DIVING

Frick fails to advance

University of Hawai'i junior Magnus Frick, who is participating with his native Swedish team, failed to reach the finals of the 1-meter springboard yesterday in the 12th FINA World Aquatic Championships at Melbourne, Australia.

Frick scored 374.10 to finish fifth in his six-man group; the top three advanced.

GOLF

UH men tie for 10th

The University of Hawai'i men's golf team finished in a tie for 10th yesterday in the 18-team 61st Western Intercollegiate at the Pasatiempo Golf Course in Santa Cruz, Calif.

The Warriors shot a three-round score of 872. Purdue won with 849.

Travis Toyama, who shot a final-round 5-over 75, was the top UH finisher at 7-over 217, good for a tie for 24th. Xavier's John Streibich won with 199.

UH in 9th, UHH 13th

The host University of Hawai'i-Manoa's women's golf team was ninth and the Hawai'i-Hilo squad 13th yesterday after the first two rounds of the 13-team Donnis Thompson Invitational at the Kane'ohe Klipper Golf Course.

The Rainbow Wahine shot 313-314—627 and the Vulcans shot 336-337—673. Arizona leads after shooting 298-303—601.

UH's Dale Gammie shot 77-73 to share seventh at 6-over 150. Randi Ono was Hilo's top scorer with 78-83—161, good for a tie for 50th. Texas-El Paso's Gerina Mendoza leads at 1-under 143 after shooting 73-70.

SOCCER

All-Star games set

The Hawai'i Youth Soccer Association Class of 2007 All-Star Game, made up of some of the top senior high school players from around the state, will be played Saturday at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium.

The girls game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. and the boys at 7:30.

Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for 18 and younger. A full concession will be offered.
