Prep baseball roundup: Kailua beats Kaimuki

Kailua right-hander Zach Akamine kept Kaimuki off-balance with his pinpoint control, and the host Surfriders used a balanced offense in a 12-1 rout Wednesday.

Akamine allowed three hits, walked none and struck out eight in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Eastern Division baseball opener for both teams.

"Just have fun, let my defense do all the work and throw strikes," said Akamine, a 5-foot-10 senior.

Akamine threw 52 strikes among his 69 pitches, and the run he allowed in the fourth was unearned. The game ended after 4 1/2 innings because of the 10-run mercy rule.

The Surfriders pounded out 15 hits, and every starter had at least one run or one RBI. Eight of the nine starters had at least one hit.

Akamine went 3 for 4 with a run, Kale Sumner batted 2 for 2 with a walk, triple and three runs, and Jared Iha was 2 for 3 with two runs.

Kenny Ellis and Keenan Tanaka (2 for 3) each had two RBIs.

MOANALUA 11, KAHUKU 0

Kekoa Lee tossed a five-inning no-hitter with eight strikeouts and no walks to lead host Na Menehune.

Lee drove in four runs with a pair of doubles and Jordan Monico hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth to put the 10-run mercy rule into effect.

KAISER 17, KALAHEO 0

Toby Inouye pitched a three-hitter over five innings with 10 strikeouts to lead the Cougars in a game shortened to five innings by the mercy rule.

ROOSEVELT 7, CASTLE 7

The Knights scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the score, and the game ended 7-7 after eight innings because of darkness. It will be recorded as a tie.

MILILANI 10, WAIPAHU 0

The Trojans' Richie Mariano pitched a no-hitter with 11 strikeouts in a game shortened to five innings because of the mercy rule.

AIEA 21, NANAKULI 0

Cody Aquino pitched a no-hitter with 12 strikeouts, and Kanekoa Asing drove in five runs as Na Ali'i won a game shortened to five innings because of the mercy rule.

WAIANAE 8, CAMPBELL 7

Ben McQown hit two home runs, including a three-run walk-off shot with two outs in the seventh, to rally the Seariders.

KAPOLEI 2, LEILEHUA 1

Michael Kahalehoe went 2 for 3 and scored the go-ahead run on a throwing error in the top of the sixth inning to lift the Hurricanes.

PEARL CITY 10, RADFORD 0

Chad Quillopo drove in three runs and Rorry Nakayama homered to help the Chargers prevail in a game shortened to five innings by the mercy rule.

PUNAHOU 11, DAMIEN 4

Matt Suiter had two hits and three RBIs, and the Buffanblu broke open the Interscholastic League of Honolulu game with an eight-run fifth.
