Kamehameha reopened in Punalu'u after carport fire

Advertiser Staff

Police have reopened a stretch of Kamehameha Highway in Punalu'u that was closed earlier this morning while firefighters extinguished a carport fire.

The highway was closed down about 12:40 a.m. and was reopened about 1:30 a.m.

Fire Capt. Frank Johnson said the fire was limited to the carport that was detached from the home.

Johnson said approximately 20 firefighters from as far away as Kahuku and Kane'ohe helped extinguish the blaze, which was reported about 12:30 a.m.

The fire was first reported as a rubbish fire. It was declared under control about 12:45 a.m.

A fire inspector is at the scene trying to determine the cause of the blaze and the monetary amount of damage that it caused.
