Kahalu'u crash kills father, baby

The single-car accident occurred on Kamehameha Highway in Kahalu'u, north of the intersection with Kahekili Highway. Kamehameha Highway was closed until about 12:45 p.m. while police investigated.
Police said the car was speeding prior to the crash. Initial estimates put the speed somewhere between 80 mph and 100 mph evidenced by the fact the car was sheared in half and the debris spread nearly 50 yards, police said.
Police dispatchers received several calls about a reckless driver who was speeding and overtaking cars just before the crash. The wrecked vehicle fits the description of the car reported to dispatchers, police said.
The victims were identified by family members at the scene as Patrick Davis and his son, Kingston, whose age was estimated at 9 months.
Davis worked for his uncle, Richard Davis, at the Waikane fruit stand, family members said.
At 8:19 a.m. police received an accident report after an automobile swerved to avoid debris and then crashed.
The infant was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:45 a.m., EMS said. The man, who was ejected from the vehicle, was pronounced dead at 8:47 a.m., EMS said.
The infant was in a child-safety seat, EMS said.
The crash happened on Kamehameha Highway between Waihe'e Road and Haiamoa Stream.
