Legislators to hear from family caregivers today

Advertiser Staff

The Hawaii Caregiver Coalition and the Kupuna Caucus of the Hawaii State Legislature are pleased to announce that this week has been designated "2007 Family Caregiver Week."

The purpose of Family Caregiver Week is to encourage and support family caregivers and increase public awareness of the importance of family caregiving. Family caregivers are non-paid family or friends who care for a family member.

Today is Family Caregiving Day at the State Capitol, which is the focal point of the activities planned for this week. Family Caregiving Day is specifically designed to bring attention to the needs of family caregivers and to inform legislators of these needs.

Highlights of Family Caregiver Day include:

iOver 30 exhibitors on the 3rd floor of the Capitol

iWalkabouts involving 12 teams of two who will visit with legislators,

iA luncheon for legislators and sponsors featuring the DVD "Rethinking Long-Term Care" highlighting the Eden Alternative and the work of Dr. Bill Thomas; and two personal stories told by family caregivers.

Exhibits will be open from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.; lunch (not open to the public) is from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in room 329; and the Kupuna Caucus meeting will follow at 1:30 p.m. in room 312.

In addition to Family Caregiver Day, other activities include publication of "Aging Issues 2007," a brochure highlighting the key aging issues being addressed by the Legislature.
