Film on genetically modified crops opens next week

A film about genetic engineering of crops "and patenting of life forms" produced by Earthjustice and Na Maka O Ka 'Aina will be presented by GMO-Free O'ahu next week in Wai'anae and Hale'iwa.

The groups said the O'ahu premiere of "Islands at Risk," will be at 6:30 p.m. March 30 at Bliss Health Food Store, 87-132 Farrington Highway, Wai'anae; and March 31 at Patagonia in the North Shore Marketplace, Hale'iwa.

The 30-minute film features local farmers, legal and medical experts and community activists sharing their concerns on the genetic engineering of crops and the patenting of life forms.

Guest speakers from the film including Moloka'i activist Walter Ritte, Kona coffee farmer Nancy Redfeather and Hawai'i Island taro farmer Jerry Konanui.
