ISLAND LIFE SHORTS
NOAA celebrates 200 years

Advertiser Staff and News Services

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration celebrates 200 years of science, service and stewardship this month with Sunset on the Beach this weekend. There will be music and food booths, of course, beginning at 4 p.m., and movies shown after sunset around 7:30 p.m., "The Little Mermaid," right, on Saturday and "Shark's Tale" on Sunday. Hawai'i has the third largest workforce of NOAA employees outside of Washington, D.C.; they predict weather, research climate, restore coral, and protect our Island habitats for turtles, monk seals and humpback whales, along with many other essential tasks. Meanwhile, your task is to head to Waikiki, and celebrate with them.

FOR A GOOD CAUSE

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, GQ

GQ, the savvy journal for men (and the women who love them), turns 50 this year. To mark the occasion the magazine has launched The Gentlemen's Fund, a push to raise support and awareness of five principles essential to men: opportunity, health, education, environment and justice. The GF "furthers a modern man's desire to be an agent of change by benefiting charities that champion these causes," says the magazine. Donate $100 or more toward The Gentlemen's Fund, and your name will be featured in GQ's Men of the Year issue. Learn more at http://thegentlemensfund.com.
