Prosecutors yesterday charged a 28-year-old 'Ewa Beach man with auto theft and being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition.

David Shane Kahui, who has 19 convictions according to Hawai'i Criminal Justice Data Center records, was arrested late Sunday night on Kuhaulua Street in Waipahu after police said they spotted him driving a stolen rental car.

Kahui stopped the car and ran, police said. While in pursuit, an officer said he saw Kahui stop and reach for something in the waistband of his trousers. The officer used his Taser to subdue Kahui.

An unloaded revolver was recovered, and police also found ammunition in the car.

Kahui's bail was set at $50,000.
