POLICE BEAT
Burned Maui girl clinging to life

Advertiser Staff

WAILUKU, Maui — The medical condition of an 8-month-old Maui girl burned in a suspected child abuse case has worsened, according to acting Capt. John Jakubczak of the Maui Police Department.

The baby was suffering from breathing difficulties when her grandparents brought her to the Maui Memorial Medical Center emergency room on March 13, Jakubczak said. Doctors at that time were suspicious of burns on the girl's face and upper right arm. The baby is believed to have been injured sometime after a March 10 doctor's appointment when no burns were noted, Jakubczak said.

No arrests have been made. The child lives at a Kahului home with her mother and her grandparents. The infant was transferred to Kapi'olani Medical Center for Women and Children, where she is listed in critical condition with organ failure caused by sepsis, he said.

HCCC FUGITIVE BACK IN CUSTODY

Big Island police have captured a 44-year-old escapee who left a jail work release program last year without permission.

Detectives arrested Richard Correa yesterday at a home in Kalapana Seaview Estates in Puna.

Correa did not return to the Hawai'i Community Correctional Center's Hale Nani facility on May 6 to finish his 120-day sentence for traffic and contempt-of-court violations.

Correa was charged with escape. Bail was set at $10,000. Correa also was being held on five bench warrants issued after he left Hale Nani.

STILL NO TRACE OF SWIMMER

WAILUKU, Maui — Maui police are asking for the public's help in finding Antonio Castro, who was reported missing last week when he didn't return from an ocean swim in Kihei.

Castro, 75, of Los Angeles, was last seen leaving his daughter's residence in Wailea at approximately 5 p.m. March 14 to go swimming at Keawakapu Beach. Castro's clothes were later found at the beach, but after days of searching by the Maui Fire Department, the Coast Guard and others there is still no sign of him.

Castro is described as Hispanic, 5 feet 9 and 175 pounds. He is balding with gray hair and brown eyes and was wearing black swim shorts.

Anyone with information should call the Maui Police Department at (808) 244-6400.
