Maunawili Bridge replacement work to begin

Advertiser Staff

Beginning Wednesday, the city plans to demolish and replace the Maunawili Bridge over Kamakalepo Stream in Windward O'ahu.

The $1.4 million project will include the demolition and removal of the existing Maunawili Bridge, guardrails, and posts with a new bridge built in the same place.

One lane will remain open throughout the 220-day project, with the contractor providing 24-hour traffic control throughout, city officials said. Construction hours are 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. weekdays.

Design consultant is KAI Hawaii, Inc. and the contractor is Kaikor Construction Company.

Mayor Mufi Hannemann said this is an example of the city needing to keep up various city facilities over time. While it's easy to focus on road repairs and potholes, "we also have to be mindful that many of our bridges are very old and in need of repair or replacement," he said.
