Donate old cell phones at UH baseball game on Sunday

Advertiser Staff

Verizon Wireless and the University of Hawaii athletics program are teaming up for the second time to help curb domestic violence in Hawaii.

Fans attending the baseball game at 1 p.m. on Sunday between Hawaii and Nevada are invited to donate used wireless telephones and accessories as part of Verizon's HopeLine program.

Phone drop boxes will be located at the main entrance to the stadium from 1 to 2 p.m.

The used phones, batteries and accessories from any provider are recycled, or refurbished and sold. Verizon uses the proceeds to award grants and wireless phones with airtime to non-profit human services and law enforcement agencies to aid survivors of domestic violence.

The Domestic Violence Clearinghouse and Legal Hotline recently awarded Verizon Wireless their Outstanding Corporate Contribution Award in the area of domestic violence. The company has donated more than $100,00 in HopeLine grants and wireless phones with airtime to domestic violence response agencies in Hawaii during the past two years.
