Hawaiian Telcom to cut 35 jobs as part of restructuring

Hawaiian Telcom said today it will cut about 35 operator positions as part of a restructioning of the company.The company said it is outsourcing directory assistance work to a company in Hawai'i as it looks at investments needed to boost new telecommunications services. Hawaiian Telcom said affected employees will be eligible for posts with the contractor.
"It's a last resort position for us," said Hawaiian Telcom Chief Executive Officer Michael Ruley. "But I think we're addressing the business realities here."
He said switch to outsourced directory assistance should be seamless and most likely won't be noticed by customers. The change is scheduled to take place by the end of April.
