NOAA joins Honolulu's 'Sunset' celebration

By Catherine E. Toth
Advertiser Urban Honolulu Writer

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) celebrates its bicentennial with two nights of entertainment, activities and movies at Sunset on the Beach this weekend.

Tomorrow's movie will be "The Little Mermaid"; Sunday will feature "Shark Tale."

Rear Adm. Samuel De Bow Jr., director of the NOAA Commissioned Officer Corps, will make a guest appearance at the event tomorrow, joining Mayor Mufi Hannemann on the Sunset stage.

"It is fitting to be here in Hawai'i, which has the third largest concentration of NOAA employees outside Washington, D.C.," De Bow said in a news release. "We are proud of the work they do."

Sunset on the Beach food booths will open at 4 p.m, with live entertainment starting at 5. The movie will begin shortly after sunset, at approximately 7:30 p.m.

The Girl Scout Council of Hawai'i will assist NOAA volunteers in providing information and overseeing games and crafts designed to promote ocean awareness, family disaster preparedness and environmental stewardship.

Na Hoku Hanohano winners Makana and Tony C will perform.

In addition to sponsors Tesoro Hawai'i and NOAA, the City & County of Honolulu, the Hawai'i Tourism Authority and the Waikiki Improvement Association produce this event.
