UH volleyball team sweeps Lewis

Advertiser Staff

Spurred by Lauri Hakala's serves, the University of Hawaii cruised to a 30-18, 30-26, 30-23 volleyball rout of Lewis (of Chicago) Friday night in the Stan Sheriff Center.

The Warriors won their third in a row to improve to 6-13.

They Flyers fell to 14-8.

Hakala slammed eight aces, including five in a row during Game 1.

In the second game, after back-to-back aces, the Flyers requested a timeout. When play resumed, UH replaced Hakala with Jim Clar behind the service line.

Hakala, whose serves can reach 70 mph, lines up on the right side and launches a cut serve that breaks heavily to the left. Lewis libero Mykolai Zerebeckyj had difficulty trying to create a platform with his elbows to pass Hakala's serves.

In all, the Warriors scored 13 points when Hakala served.

Hakala also contributed 10 kills in 25 swings.

Matt Vanzant had 11 kills for UH, but committed eight attack errors.

The Warriors dominated the first game. They built 23-13 lead when they began mass substitutions.

Eleven Warriors played last night.

Jared Dayton led the Flyers with 11 kills, and Drew Pickering added 10.

The rematch between the teams is Saturday night, with first serve at about 7:05.
