Kahuku Hospital support nearing approval

Advertiser Staff

House leaders stood with Kahuku Hospital administrators and workers today to announce that a $950,000 emergency funding bill is set to pass the House this afternoon and head to Gov. Linda Lingle's desk for possible approval.

SB1260 would allow Kahuku Hospital to continue operating through the legislative session, preserve its hospital license, retain its certificate of need and critical access hospital designation, reorganize and settle its debts.

A spokesman for Lingle said that SB1260 would have to undergo the normal due process of any bill but it mirrors another bill proposed by the administration.

The 25-bed hospital filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last month and in November announced that it would be forced to close. Kahuku Hospital is the only hospital on the North Shore.
