A year ago tomorrow, an aging sewer pipe broke under Kai'olu Street in Waikiki, resulting in the worst sewage release in O'ahu history.

To avoid raw sewage backing up into homes, businesses and hotels, the city diverted 48 million gallons of it into the Ala Wai Canal.

An emergency bypass was completed in July, and the second phase of a project to install new wastewater pipes is under way.

Contractors will begin boring a second parallel line beneath the canal and Kai'olu Street to lay new pipes.

The city expects the bulk of construction to be completed by late summer.
