Glanville's Portland State staff has Hawai'i flavor

Associated Press

PORTLAND, Ore. — On the job for nearly a month, new Portland State football coach Jerry Glanville has been busy assembling his staff.

Kevin Strasser was named wide receivers coach on Friday and is the latest hire by Glanville, joining offensive coordinator Mouse Davis, offensive line coach Brian Smith (a former Hawai'i player), running backs coach Franke Geske, defensive line coach Josh Fetter, and wide receivers coach Jim Craft.

Davis, the former Vikings coach from 1975-80, was probably Glanville's most significant hire.

Davis, 74, and Glanville worked together on June Jones' staff at Hawai'i for the past two seasons.

''Because of the relationship we already have, there is a built-in feeling of 'let's get it done,' '' Davis said.

Davis, who popularized the run-and-shoot offense, led the Vikings to a 42-24 record over six seasons. Working with quarterbacks including Jones and Neil Lomax, Davis' teams averaged 38 points per game.

After Portland State, Davis went on to coach in the Canadian Football League, the now-defunct USFL, the NFL and the Arena Football League.

An Oregon native, Davis also coached at Hillsboro, Sunset and Milwaukie high schools.

Davis was an inaugural member of the Portland State Athletics Hall of Fame when he was inducted in 1997.

Craft played tight end at Portland State and served for the last six seasons under Vikings head coach Tim Walsh, who left after 14 seasons to take the offensive coordinator position at Army.

Craft was tight ends coach for five seasons at Portland State before becoming quarterbacks coach last season.

Fetter also coached last season under Walsh.

''We interviewed defensive line coaches across the country, and it became obvious the best one was right here in the office,'' Glanville said. ''When I narrowed it down between Josh and the last visiting coach, Josh suggested we put them both in a closet and the one that walks out would be the coach. Right then, I knew Josh was the right guy.''

Geske will work under Davis as running backs coach, a post he's held at Portland State since 2005, when he led Joe Rubin to a 1,702-yard season -- the second best in PSU history.

Geske coached at the high school level in Oregon for 26 years, his last nine at Tigard High School.

Smith worked last season as a graduate assistant at Oregon State in 2006. He played center at Hawai'i from 1998 through 2001.

Strasser was with the Alouettes for the past five seasons.

Glanville, former coach of the NFL's Houston Oilers and Atlanta Falcons, was defensive coordinator at Hawai'i for the past two seasons under Jones. He was named Portland State's new coach on Feb. 28.
