Wai'anae shooting as men try to take cockfight money

Advertiser Staff

Police say a fatal shoot-out in Wai'anae this morning was apparently part of a botched robbery, with several gunmen attempting to steal the proceeds of an illegal cockfighting ring.

Police said one or two cars pulled up at a house on Maiu'u Road about 6:30 a.m. and several men broke down the door.

Shots were fired between the gunmen and one or more people in the home. When police arrived a short time later, a man who had been shot was on the ground in front of the house.

The man, a 29-year-old, was taken to the Wai'anae Coast Comprehensive Health Center, where he died.

Lt. Eric Yu, of the police Criminal Investigation Division, said cock fights were held at the home on Maiu'u Road.

"It appears someone was there to rip them off," he said.

"Both sides had weapons."

A suspect in the killing was arrested and taken into custody at 10:30 a.m.
