Senators to show their horse sense at picnic today

Advertiser Staff

Members of the state Senate from both parties will gather today to celebrate the halfway point of this year's session and Prince Kuhio Day at the invitation of Sen. Clayton Hee with a picnic, socializing, and horseback rides for the senators' keiki and the senators themselves.

Hee issued the invitation to all senators and their staff on the floor of the Senate during a recent session. "We have started having a picnic or barbeque at our home to celebrate end of session in the past couple of years, and it's been well-attended," said Hee, who is bringing his horse Lucky by trailer from Kahalu'u to offer rides to party guests.

"This year we thought we'd do something different. Several senators, including Sen. David Ige, have seen the horse on TV and have asked if their children can ride. I thought it would be a good idea to open it up to all senators and staff so we can have some relaxed time away from legislative duties and enjoy each other's company.

"We expect about 40 to 50 people, including both Republicans and Democrats, to come out today. I am saving the most conservative horse in the barn for Sam Slom and the most spirited, liberal horse for Senate President Colleen Hanabusa!" said Hee.
