Major quake rattles Vanuatu islands in South Pacific

Advertiser Staff

A major earthquake shook an area of the South Pacific near Vanuatu at about 2:40 p.m. Saturday.

The quake, assigned a preliminary magnitude of 7.2, was strong enough for the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in 'Ewa Beach to send out an advisory saying the earthquake had occurred but that it did not appear to generate a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami.

The Warning Center sent out a bulletin regarding the quake at about 3:05 p.m.

There was no immediate report of injuries or damage from the quake on Vanuatu, a series of islands about 1,100 miles east-northeast of Brisbane, Australia.
