Fatigued hikers in Moanalua Valley call for rescue

Advertiser Staff

A small group of hikers camping overnight in Moanalua Valley called for a rescue this morning, according to the Honolulu Fire Department, which responded with its Air One helicopter.

Fire department Capt. Frank Johnson said the campers called for assistance shortly after 9 a.m. today. He said the group of three or four hikers reported that fatigue, not injury, was the reason for their call.

"They were having a hard time getting out," Johnson said.

The airlift rescue was still in progress shortly before 11 a.m., and the condition of the hikers was not immediately available.

Johnson said the campers were on a ridge on the 'ewa side of Moanalua Valley behind Tripler Army Medical Center.
