Sixth-inning surge lifts Roosevelt over Kalani

By Kyle Sakamoto
Advertiser Staff Writer

The Roosevelt baseball team got more than enough insurance runs in the sixth inning yesterday to ensure victory against Kalani at Stevenson Intermediate field.

The Rough Riders sent 13 batters to the plate and scored seven times in the sixth to win the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Eastern Division game, 10-2.

The inning included five singles, two walks, two hit basemen, two errors and a stolen base against three pitchers.

"Our hitting has been pretty consistent," Roosevelt coach Craig Arakawa said. "When we get in a groove like that, we can go one through nine."

Roosevelt junior Kelson Okimoto, a side-slinging left-hander, allowed seven hits over six innings. He walked two — one intentionally — and hit a batter.

"I was going all changeups because my curveball was wild," Okimoto said. "I relied on my changeup and changing speeds on my fastball."

He benefitted from line-out double plays to end the second and third innings.

Okimoto struck out his only two batters in the sixth with runners at first and second and the Rough Riders ahead, 3-2.

"He's a little bit sick, but he always guts it out," Arakawa said. "He's not going to overpower or fool anybody. He just changes his speeds, gets ahead and lets his 'D' work for him."

In the Roosevelt sixth, Nick Dang led off by reaching on a fielding error by the shortstop. Christian Awaya singled to left and Tyler Nitahara walked, which ended the day for Kalani starter Shamus Kumashiro.

Dillon Matsuda struck out the first batter he faced, but the next six batters reached — walk, hit by pitch and four singles.

Keoni Manago had a two-run single with the bases loaded to make it 6-2. Darin Fujii and Nick Wong followed with run-scoring singles.

The final run scored when Nitahara was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

"We messed up a ground ball," Kalani coach Shannon Hirai said. "We should have had an out at least and the roof caved in. Everything started to fall in."

Wong, who started at third base, pitched the seventh for Roosevelt and allowed a hit with two strikeouts.

"In the preseason, we've been off and on and to beat a good team like Kalani, the confidence on our team should start picking up," Arakawa said.

Roosevelt's Justin Otaguro hit a two-run homer to left in the second, and Manago singled in a run in the fifth.
