Ex-Isle resident becomes Oberlin basketball coach

Advertiser Staff and News Services

Isaiah Cavaco, who was born and raised in Hawai'i, took over the Oberlin (Ohio) College basketball program today, a year after becoming interim coach.

Cavaco, a former Yale guard, became interim coach in March 2006 after Frank Dobbs resigned as head coach and assistant athletic director at Oberlin, an NCAA Division III school. Cavaco served two years as an assistant to Dobbs.

Cavaco attended Punahou from kindergarten to eighth grade, then moved to Southern California to seek greater exposure and competition in basketball. He was named to the All-Orange County team playing for Villa Park High in 1997.

Oberlin was 5-20 overall, 4-12 in the North Coast Athletic Conference this season.
