Catamaran owner releases statement on fatal accident

Here is a statement from Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa following an accident yesterday in waters off West Maui in which a man was killed when a mast on a catamaran snapped, sinking the craft.

"We are deeply saddened by this accident and our concern is for those who have been affected by this tragic event. We are in direct contact with the Coast Guard and other authorities involved to understand how the accident happened. In the meantime, our attention is focused on attending to the people involved."

The written statement was faxed today.

Fifty people were aboard the Kiele V catamaran when the accident occurred after 5 p.m. yesterday. A 48-year-old man was killed, and two people were injured in the accident.
