80-year-old pedestrian killed yesterday on Kaua'i

PUHI, Kaua'i – An 80-year-old Puhi woman died yesterday after being run over in her Ono Street driveway by a neighbor.

Police said Alepia Motilla was fatally injured at about 8:30 a.m. when she was hit by a car driven by a 60-year-old neighbor. The man apparently was reversing his car into the victim's driveway when he mistakenly stepped on the accelerator instead of the brake pedal and ran into Motilla, a parked truck and a corner of the woman's house, police said.

Motilla was initially treated at Wilcox Hospital before being transferred to The Queen's Medical Center in Honolulu, where she died at about 4 p.m.

Motilla's death is not being counted as a traffic fatality because the accident occurred on private property, said Kaua'i Traffic Safety investigator Officer James Miller.
