A 46-year-old woman remains in a Maui hospital in stable condition after surviving a catamaran accident yesterday in which a man was killed, Maui county officials said.

Two people were injured and a 48-year-old man was killed when the mast of the Kiele V catamaran snapped after 5 p.m. in waters off West Maui. The catamaran then sank.

County spokeswoman Mahina Martin said a 57-year-old man who is a Hawai'i resident and the 46-year-old woman, also a Hawai'i resident, were taken to Maui Memorial yesterday; the man was released last night.

The man who died in the accident has been identified as Hal Pulfer of Highland Park, Ill.

Maui County officials said Pulfer was visiting Maui with his wife and three children ages 7, 10 and 12. An autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow.
