Restaurant Epic closes after less than 2 months

Restaurant Epic, the Chinatown restaurant at 1131 Nu'uanu that opened with much fanfare Feb. 11, abruptly closed its doors last Thursday.

The controlling interest in the restaurant is held by the owners of Little Village Noodle House, David Chang and Kenneth and Jennifer Chan, with chef Anthony Vierra a minority stockholder. Vierra continued to serve as executive chef at his family's Grand Cafe & Bakery nearby while running the kitchen at Epic, which was open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.

There is no word yet on whether the restaurant will re-open and, if so, in what format; neither Chang nor the Chans could be reached for comment.

Of his decision to return to Grand Cafe, Vierra said, in a prepared statement, "We simply found that divergent minds could not make a convergent product. I wish them only the best."

Mona Chang Vierra, Grand Cafe co-owner with Patsy Izumo, said her son will focus on building Grand Cafe's dinner and brunch business. Beginning on April 4, Grand Café and Bakery will be adding dinner service to their 'Ilima Award-winning (2006 Critic's Choice, Best in Breakfast) breakfast and lunch menu. In addition, the restaurant will soon procure their liquor license.
