Maui officer honored for traffic-safety advocacy

Maui police Capt. Charles Hirata was honored yesterday by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for his initiative and dedication toward improving child passenger safety and traffic safety in Hawai'i and the Pacific Rim.Hirata, a 30-year police veteran, is commander of the Lahaina District and a longtime advocate of laws protecting children riding in cars. He is also a certified child car seat inspector who has organized numerous free inspection events over the years.
NHTSA Administrator Nicole Nason presented the public service award to Hirata and 14 other individuals and organizations for their work to reduce traffic deaths and injuries across the country.
He was the only Hawai'i recipient of the award, which was announced during a luncheon at the 25th Annual Lifesavers conference in Chicago.
