Sunday death is 10th Big Island traffic fatal

Advertiser Staff

A 36-year-old Honoka'a man died Sunday from injuries he suffered in a crash on Ali'i Drive in Kailua, Kona.

Police said Wesley I. Hirata was driving a white 2007 Toyota pickup truck north when it ran off the road and struck a rock wall near Ho'omaluhia Place shortly before 8:58 a.m.

Hirata was taken to Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9:50 a.m.

Police said speed and alcohol are not considered factors in the crash and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Hirata's death is the 10th traffic fatality on the Big Island this year, compared with seven at this time last year.
