State, catamaran's owners aim to salvage sunken boat

Associated Press

State officials and the owner of a whale-watching catamaran, which sank after its 65-foot mast broke off near Maui killing an Illinois businessman, are developing a plan to salvage the vessel, the Coast Guard said today.

A helicopter spotted the underwater wreckage of the Kiele V late Monday near Moloka'i with parts of the boat broken up and a portion of the hull on the reef, Coast Guard Petty Officer Michael DeNysc said.

The Coast Guard is investigating the accident, which occurred Sunday and will release more details in its report, which could take at least six months to complete, Lt. John Titchen said.
