Hawaiian cultural practitioners sought

Advertiser Staff

The Western Pacific Fishery Management Council wants to identify cultural practitioners and receive input on the re-establishment of 'aha moku councils in the islands.

Native Hawaiian cultural practitioners from the Ko'olauloa and Ko'olaupoko (Makapu'u to Waimea) areas are invited to attend a meeting on the subject at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Windward Community College Hale 'Akoakoa Building.

The 'aha moku councils will advise the state Department of Land and Natural Resources on cultural issues. Similar meetings have been held on the Leeward coast and throughout the islands.

Native Hawaiians will be part of the process of developing rules and regulations concerning our resources and sacred places, said Leialoha "Rocky" Kaluhiwa, a member of the Ko'olaupoko Hawaiian Civic Club. "This is well way overdue."
