Ching may miss U.S. soccer game

Advertiser Staff

Forward Brian Ching, of Hale'iwa, did not sustain any breaks after getting kicked in the face Sunday and leaving in the 63rd minute in the U.S. men's soccer team's 3-1 victory over Equador.

Ching, who might not play against Guatemala tomorrow, fed Landon Donovan for the second of his three goals Sunday.

"Physically, I think he's OK," U.S. interim coach Bob Bradley said. "We also have some other forwards in camp, so it's a question mark in terms of how we will choose to use him, so that's something that we'll discuss. I thought he had a very good game. His ability to be in good positions, hold the ball, fight for the ball, and obviously, the second goal was as a result of his ability to turn a play into a great pass."

U.S. soccer players arrived in Texas yesterday, but their equipment, however, didn't make it.

With no gear and steady rain, the team called off a planned practice ahead of tonight's exhibition game.

UH DROPS TO 13TH

Despite a two-match sweep of Lewis University, the University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team dropped one spot to 13th in the College Sports Television/American Volleyball Coaches Association poll announced yesterday.

The 7-13 Warriors traded places with Southern California (10-11), which defeated No. 9 Long Beach State.

UH plays at unranked UC San Diego on Thursday and Friday.

Pepperdine (19-1) remains at No. 1.

Rachelle Wade added a solo homer, and Jana Dewey and Agesha Lightsy each had three hits for BYUH (12-14 overall, 3-7 PacWest). Dewey had two RBIs.

HPU WINS ONE ON ROAD

Courtney Kessell fired a two-hitter as Hawai'i Pacific beat Grand Canyon, 8-0, yesterday to split a Pacific West Conference softball doubleheader at Phoenix.

Kessell walked one and struck out three in a game that was shortened to five innings because of the eight-run mercy rule.

In the first game, Megan Niver's two-run single in the sixth broke a 1-1 tie and rallied the Antelopes (18-18) to the win, 3-1.
