Lawyers urge review of Kamehameha admission rules

Advertiser Staff

Lawyers for an unnamed teenager who was denied admission to Kamehameha Schools have submitted the final briefs urging the U.S. Supreme Court to review the Hawaiians-first admissions policy.

The high court could rule as early as next month on whether it will accept the case.

Attorneys yesterday filed their 10-page response to a legal brief submitted earlier by Kamehameha Schools urging the high court not to accept the case.

The case involves whether the private school's admission policy violates the federal civil rights law.

The non-Hawaiian teenager challenged the policy, which led to a 8-7 ruling by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in December. The appeals court ruled the policy did not violate the law.

The attorneys representing the teenager and his mother contend the 9th Circuit decision should be reversed by the high court.
