Kaua'i pushing for $812,305 in federal grants

LIHU'E, Kaua'i—The county hopes to receive $812,305 in federal Community Development Block Grant funds for seven projects over the coming year.

Mayor Bryan Baptiste has announced the funding, and proclaimed April 9-15 Community Development Week on Kaua'i.

The projects include:

  • the restoration of the 92-year-old Japanese Stone Lantern in Kapa'a;

  • two counseling and education programs for new homebuyers;

  • a program to finance low-cost mortgages for low to moderate-income homebuyers;

  • an emergency shelter kitchen;

  • a project to provide electronic media training in the old dispensary in Waimea;

  • and a vehicle for Kaua'i Economic Opportunity, to be used to provide transport for residents of a county homeless shelter, to help them in getting jobs and gaining self-sufficiency.

    A series of posters on the various projects will be available to the public at 10 a.m. April 10 and 2 p.m. April 12 at conference room A in the county's Pi'ikoi Building. For more information, call 241-4428.
