Hawai'i-Hilo baseball grounds Air Force, 9-3

Michael Higa went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and Lars Knepper pitched seven solid innings as host Hawai'i-Hilo beat Air Force, 9-3, yesterday in a non-conference baseball game at Francis Wong Stadium.

Knepper (2-5) spaced seven hits and allowed two runs and four walks. He struck out five. Karl Maas pitched the final two innings, allowing one run.

UH-Hilo's David Chu, A.J. Satele, Dayne Ogawa, Jon Vitale and Shane Kessel each had two hits. Chu added two RBIs for the Vulcans (6-23), which had 19 hits in the game.

Chay Derbigny and Karl Bolt had three hits apiece for the Falcons (5-21).

BYUH SWEEPS ON ROAD

Jana Dewey hit a two-run home run and and Crystal De La Cruz scattered seven hits as Brigham Young-Hawai'i beat Notre Dame de Namur, 3-1, yesterday in sweeping a Pacific West Conference softball doubleheader at Belmont, Calif.

Dewey's homer was her 11th of the season for the Seasiders (14-14 overall, 5-7 PacWest). De La Cruz allowed one run, two walks and struck out four.

In the second game, Austin Long fired a four-hitter as the Seasiders won, 11-1, in a contest shortened to five innings because of the eight-run mercy rule.

BYUH sent 13 batters to the plate in its nine-run fourth inning against the Argonauts (10-28, 3-15). Clairissa Bruce and Rachelle Wade had three hits apiece. Bruce and Taylor Burke had two RBIs each.
