Honolulu Zoo renews accreditation

Advertiser Staff

The Association of Zoos and Aquariums has renewed the Honolulu Zoo's accreditation though March 2011.

AZA had tabled the zoo's accreditation due to maintenance and staffing issues.

"We addressed the issues identified by the accreditation team, cleaned up the facilities and filled empty positions," said Sidney Quintal, director of the city's Department of Enterprise Services, which manages the zoo. "We're told the AZA board took less than five minutes this week to vote full accreditation for Honolulu."

The zoo occupies 42 acres at Kapi'olani Park and has more than 1,000 animals.

Mayor Mufi Hannemann announced the accreditation today.
