USC star receiver Jarrett runs slow 40 at Pro Day

Advertiser Staff

University of Southern California star receiver Dwayne Jarrett, whose first-round status might be riding on his 40-yard dash time, recorded relatively slow times at the school's pro day yesterday, according to nfl.com.

According to Gil Brandt, former Dallas Cowboys general manager who writes for nfl.com, USC coach Pete Carroll addressed all the NFL personnel present and discussed each player's strengths and weaknesses.

He also showed video of Jarrett's catches -- the ones he made in practices, not games.

Jarrett is known for big catches in games, too. His fourth-down catch set up USC's game-winning touchdown against Notre Dame two seasons ago. He also was the star at this past Rose Bowl, in which he clearly outdueled Michigan's Leon Hall, considered the top cornerback in the upcoming draft.

The USC players ran on the FieldTurf practice field. For the 40-yard dash, they started from one of the goal lines and ran to the 40. The first couple of yards had a slight incline. There were some gusts of wind, but it is believed they did not affect the times, nfl.com reported.

Jarrett (6-4, 214) ran his 40s in 4.67 and 4.62 seconds, the Web site reporter. He also ran the short shuttle in 4.20 and the three-cone drill in 7.28. He also had a 36 1/2-inch vertical jump and a 10-foot-1 broad jump.
